The way I look at it, the US government should be like a good umpire at a
baseball game. If he does his job well, you don't even notice. He doesn't
coach the players. He doesn't tell the coaches who should be in the
game. And he certainly doesn't tell the fans which food to buy at the
concession stand. He just knows the rule book, follows his job
description, and the game is enjoyed by all. Yes, the umpire must be present, but only to maintain the order of the game.
